Hotaru Ichijō, a fifth-grade elementary school student, moved with her parents from Tokyo to a rural countryside. She was surprised to find that the local children knew nothing about the big city. Even more surprising was the fact that the only school in the entire village had just four students, all of whom, despite their different ages, were in the same class. The differences from the capital did not stop there. Hotaru had much to learn about life in the remote countryside, where no one ever locked their doors, where the surroundings were lush and verdant, with babbling brooks and sun-drenched fields. The only sounds were the occasional passing of old cars, and an overall soothing silence prevailed. It was like a different world, a strange world that required a guide. Fortunately, Hotaru found four such guides: the cheerful sisters Natsumi and Komari Koshigaya, their older, quiet brother Suguru, and the troublesome Renge Miyauchi. These children were ready to help the new friend adapt to their familiar world, while also being curious to learn about the big city from her.
