Ю's best friend is a typical underachiever who has no desire to study, though according to Ю, he could if he wanted to. Instead, he is genuinely passionate about football and constantly tries to get Ю, who was once on the team but then quit, believing he lacked talent, to join him. Isami believes their teacher, Yukié Nijō, is the object of his affection, so he regularly attempts to get closer to her, either by inviting her on dates or trying to sit in the front seat of her car. However, it's actually Ai that he likes much more, though he doesn't seem to realize it himself - he gives her a phone charm, saves her from bullies, and even confesses his love for her when they get trapped in the Shangri-La dimension. Isami is a bit rough around the edges but completely sincere. He does what he enjoys without overthinking the difficult problems that Ю grapples with. This sometimes leads to disagreements between the friends, but Isami can't stay mad for long. He is terrified of ghosts and spirits, though he showed more courage than the supernatural enthusiast Miho when they encountered one of the deadly Birds during a trip to the cemetery. Isami has an older brother who, like him, doesn't much care for studying. He seems not too bright, but can actually provide Isami with valuable moral and practical support. When they were pulled into the Noein dimension, Isami was separated from his older brother and fell in with a bad crowd, becoming a genuine hooligan. Isami calls him his "stupid brother." They also have a younger sister, Fumiko, who makes beaded key chains in the shape of chicks. Isami gave one to Ai and another later to Haruka, causing a rift between the friends. Isami's parents have passed away, and he is raised by his grandmother. Her death in the Noein dimension was the starting point for Isami and Ai's future to spiral out of control. Isami's favorite phrase, which he uses both appropriately and inappropriately, is "Incredible." Their teacher Yukié also loves this phrase, and it's unclear who picked up the habit from whom.
